After nearly six years of public hearings and agreements, the bridge that connects the Rocha and Maldonado districts in Uruguay has finally been completed. It is called Laguna Garzón Bridge and was designed by renowned Uruguayan architect Rafael Vignoli (of Rafael Viñoly), who designed it as a circle, symbolizing the "lagoon inside the lagoon." In addition to the road connecting the two banks, the round bridge is an excellent resting place for tourists and fishermen.

Laguna Garzón Circular Bridge
Laguna Garzón Bridge is a unique circular bridge with two oncoming traffic lanes, which diverge in opposite directions in the center of the bridge, forming a circle. On both sides of the road lane there are footpaths for walking across the bridge. Rafael Vignoli says that he made the central part of the bridge in the shape of a circle specifically to slow down the movement of road traffic, thus minimizing the negative impact on the ecosystem of the lagoon.

The unusual Laguna Garzón Bridge was built to replace the old lagoon ferry system, which can hold just two cars. The bridge is high enough to allow boats to pass unhindered underneath.

An impressive fact: In Beijing, an old bridge was demolished and a new one was built in 48 hours.
