Waimea Canyon appeared in the Pacific Ocean on Kauai, one of the Hawaiian Islands, millions of years ago. The geology of the canyon speaks of its volcanic origin, like all the Hawaiian Islands. It arose as a result of movements of the earth's crust and the destructive subsequent impact of the Waimea River, which washed the canyon directly into Mount Waialeale.

Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific Ocean. A huge park with an area of over seven square kilometers is laid around it. The unspoiled nature of the island, protected by local foresters, has long been a popular tourist destination. Hiking is especially appreciated.

A map of these routes is easy to obtain at any forester station. The Kukui Trail, for example, takes hikers down the canyon slopes to the Waimea River. A huge number of trails are located in the northern part of the canyon in Kokee State Park. The main attraction of the park is the Alalai bog. The trails here pass only in some of the most accessible places. Only in this area are the tiny birds of Anianiau and kiwi living.

The visit to Waimea Canyon includes a demonstration of local fish ponds, Fern Grotto, Valley and Captain Cook's landing site. In the canyon, many scenes from films were filmed, including such thundering throughout the world as "King Kong" and "Jurassic Park". The Fern Grotto cave looks especially picturesque. It can only be accessed by boat on the Wailua River. This feature made the cave very popular with honeymooners.
