Bodiam Castle, Robertsbridge, England (with Map & Photos)

Bodiam Castle

The Bodiam Castle near the River Rother, seems exactly as many imagine, a medieval castle built on the top. A square floor plan surrounded by high walls, a round tower at each corner, and a square tower on each side of the wall. All this surrounded by a moat.

Bodiam Castle - So perfect that one wonders if this castle was conceived and built at the time for defensive purposes or as a sophisticated manor property.

In 1385, Edward Dallyngrigge, a veteran who became rich during the 100 Years War, received permission from King Richard III to build and fortify his manor house, as the king feared a French invasion.

Bodiam Castle - Instead of just fortifying his house, he used the permit to build a new castle. The king forgave him. The invasion never took place, so the fortifications were never put to the test. Little is known about the history of the castle, but it seems that it was inhabited until the 15th century. During the English civil wars, it almost completely burned down and the plant collapsed.

Lord Curzon, bought the building in 1917 and began to restore it. It is thanks to him that today you can walk along some walls to the towers.

The impressive front door house is still preserved with the original wooden portals. The entrance gate can be reached from the north side of the castle via an octagonal island with the remains of a watchtower. Although there is little left inside, you can still see: Remains of stairs, chimneys, portals and some walls where you can see the holes in the old windows.

Bodiam Castle - You can go up to the towers and from there you have a wonderful view over the land and the river valley.
