The Dunvegan Castle is the ancestral seat of a clan whose name gives chills to all fans of Highlander in the world: For more than 800 years clanchiefs of the MacLeod, teachers of Skye, have been living here, directly on the rugged coastline Atlantic.

The clan name is known from the movie "Highlander" (although you have chosen another castle as the setting). In fact, the clan is almost as old as the Kingdom of Scotland.
In the mid-13th century, the Norsemen were crushed by King Alexander III and the MacLeod clan became more Gaelic. Although the fortress is originally quite challenging (right a very early picture) - like all fortifications - it has changed over the centuries to what one can visit today.

The eventful history of the MacLeods can be seen at Dunvegan Castle in many different ways: Ancestor galleries, castle and garden tours, a visitor center showcase the history of a clan in one of the most beautiful but also inhospitable corners of Scotland.
The magical items of the clan are also seen:
The fairy flag, for example, around which various legends are intertwined, has been protecting the clan for many centuries and has miraculously protected the land and people on various occasions.
The country of the MacLeods also played a prominent role in the Jacobite revolts. In the Dunvegan Castle there are still some personal belongings of Flora MacDonald to see today - the Scottish national heroine who allowed Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape the Dukes of Cumberland's Hunters.

The clan still lives in the castle today, but as a visitor you can see very beautiful areas of the castle or let your eyes roam the bay. In addition, part of the rooms can be rented for parties.
The Dunvegan Castle is located on the Isle of Skye, west of Scotland. You can therefore reach Skye via a massive bridge or - for friends of leisurely travel - by ferry.
You can also pass through Portree and head north to enjoy the magnificent views of this beautiful island. In the north of Skyes there is a youth hostel with a wonderful panoramic view.
Result: A must see for every visitor to Scotland. The visitor areas are made very lovingly, the history of the country and the clan live here.
