England and its castles. What postcards! Today we may seem like the most romantic places but they are full of stories of battles, places and moments that are harder than happy. The largest ruined castle in England is in Kenilworth, Warwickshire and it is the one you see in the pictures.
Kenilworth Castle |
The Kenilworth Castle, that's his name, still in ruins is really shocking. Its Norman and Tudor architecture and the fact that it is the finest example of a semi-royal palace-castle from the Middle Ages is striking, important for its size, shape and quality of construction. It is no small thing.
The castle was built over several years although it was founded in 1120 on the foundations of a Norman tower. It was enlarged by King John in the early 13th century with engineering works that dammed nearby streams and created water defenses, and in the 14th century it was retouched and converted into a fortified palace.

Later, Tudor-style buildings would arrive and after a certain Renaissance palace printing press was granted. It was besieged for six years, the longest siege in the country, and finally the forces of Parliament destroyed it so that it would not be used as a military fortress and it was left in ruins. Since the 18th century it has been a great tourist attraction.
Today people can visit it and see five centuries of English military and civil architecture in one place. The high walls without ceilings, the empty windows, the doors that open to nowhere and the gardens, everything is wonderful and now that Christmas is coming even closer there are Christmas events right here.
