The
Milwaukee Pierhead Light was built in 1872 near where the
Milwaukee River empties into Lake Michigan. It is one of the typical "red towers" that light the sailors' path on Lake Michigan, as well as the "twin sister" of the Kenosha Lighthouse,
located north of Pierhead.

The lighthouse had its own watch until 1926, then, along with other surrounding lighthouses, it was operated by the operator, stationed at the North Point lighthouse. Today it is completely automated.
