One man is largely responsible for the awareness of the Pilsum lighthouse. We are talking about probably the most famous East Frisian: Otto Waalkes. In his comedy "Otto - Der Ausserfriesische" he lives as the main actor in the Pilsum lighthouse. The film, released in 1989, celebrated its 30th anniversary in Krummhörn in 2019. In the classic, Otto Waalkes saves his homeland, East Friesland, from the multi-billion dollar company "High Speed Unlimited".

The lighthouse was not only used as a backdrop in films. Author Bernd Flessner also used the “Lükko lighthouse” as the main motif in his children's books. The Pilsum lighthouse is open for guided tours. Interested visitors are guided through the lighthouse and learn a lot of interesting facts about the history of this famous landmark on the East Frisian North Sea coast as well as about the importance of the dyke construction in the Krummhörn.
