Restormel Castle - There are many wonderful things that we can know about this medieval castle in Cornwall, southwest of England.
The castle itself is a marvel, a well-maintained fortification, originally built in the 11th century in a perfectly circular shape.

The most unique feature of the Norman Castle of Restormel is the way the chambers, including the kitchens, the Great Hall and the guest bedrooms, are arranged against the outer circular walls (the exception is the entrance door, which has a bridge drawbridge over the moat that surrounds the castle and the chapel). The grandeur of the design can be seen in the large windows and fireplaces, and in the great Great Room.

The ruins we see today of Restormel Castle were once part of a luxurious residence for the Earl of Cornwall, being one of the four main Norman castles in Cornwall.

Restormel's early history is shrouded in mystery. Some researchers believe that it could have been the first castle built by the Norman conquerors. The original castle was probably built in the late 11th century by Baldwin Fitz Turstin and the stone tower was possibly built by King Edmund in the 13th century.

After the Duke of Cornwall Edmund died in 1299, the county of Cornwall reverted to the crown, and Restormel lost its importance, falling into decline. In 1337, the castle passed into the hands of the first Duke of Cornwall, Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, son of Edward III. One of its main attractions at the time was the large deer park that surrounded it, full of game. After Eduardo died in 1376, the castle fell into disrepair again. He briefly reoccupied himself and was involved in various conflicts during the English Civil War in the mid-17th century. Later it would be abandoned once more.
Since 1925 Restormel has been officially owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and guarded by English Heritage. It is the best example that still remains of a circular castle in the whole of the UK. It is also a lovely place for an excursion such as a picnic or hike.
