Aldeyjarfoss is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland and one of the most changeable! We saw it in winter and it is super magical, but in summer its basalt columns are even better.

It has a 20 meter drop into a turquoise blue pool of water that is perfect for photos, even from a drone view. The contrast of the blue with the basalt is spectacular.
The waterfall emerges from the Báðardalshraun lava field, whose last eruption was almost 10,000 years ago.

ACCESS: Complicated! Aldeyjarfoss is off the beaten track of the Ring Road in North Iceland. You have to drive about 40 kilometers through the Bárðardalur valley. This section must be done on an unpaved road, which is not more complicated in summer and if it has not rained (in winter you have to hire a specialized tour, such as Arctic Adventures ).
The road you must take is 842 until it becomes the (fabulous!) F-26. The route beyond Aldeyjarfoss is very scenic, but you have to be very careful! since the bridges do not have protections and you have to wade rivers.
