Perched on a rocky promontory in the Vaucluse Mountains, in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, Gordes is a typical Provençal village that looks like something out of a postcard. Its picturesque cobbled streets surrounded by houses with yellow stone, its fountains and vaulted passages or its splendid Renaissance castle that majestically dominates the landscape, have attracted many artists, such as Chagall and Vasarely, who came here for inspiration.

Your steps will also take you to the palace of San Fermín, with its cellars carved out of the rock itself. Here you can see, among other things, the remains of cisterns, silos and an old stately oil mill that testifies to the craft activities of the town in the Middle Ages. The nearby church of San Fermín, built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century and renovated in the 18th century, will captivate fans of ancient stones. Among other interesting buildings, it is worth mentioning an old laundry on Carrer de la Fontaine Basse, the Santiago alms shop, which formerly welcomed pilgrims who went to Santiago, or the chapel of the White Penitents.

The terrible insecurity due to the multiple invasions through the centuries forced the rural population to take refuge in the hills. This is the origin of this mountain village. The strategic value of this fortified village will continue throughout the Middle Ages and part of the Renaissance, especially during the wars of religion.
Gordes is located in the heart of the Luberon and is an important center of interest, but also the starting point for numerous visits such as many mountain villages in nearby Roussillon and the Colorado Provençal ocher trail or Fontaine de Vaucluse.
