Reichenbach Falls, Meirigen, Switzerland (with Map & Photos)

The Reichenbach Falls are just outside the village of Meirigen (595 m). In them Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put an end to the adventures of his most charismatic character, Sherlock Holmes, who plunged through the 250 m waterfall with his arch enemy, Professor Moriarty.

Being the scene of death (although he later resurrected it due to popular pressure) of one of the most famous literary characters in British literature, has made Meirigen grow up under the cover of this fame and that we can find commemorative statues and even streets like Baker Street.

Meirigen is also famous for being the birthplace of meringues, but the famous sweet that Italian confectioner Gasparini created a few centuries ago.

Reichenbach funicular

Although the Reichenbach Falls can be reached on foot, it is much faster and more comfortable to do it on the Grimselwelt company funicular, which also manages other ways to go up to incredible places such as the Gelmer funicular or the Trift cable car.

It is a red wooden monocar funicular that is an exact replica of the first funicular that climbed the Reichenbach waterfalls, back in 1899. The journey takes just 10 minutes and crosses a beautiful forest while rapidly gaining height. Halfway through, the only road forks so that the downhill funicular can pass.

The truth is that the feeling of being in the last century is quite intense thanks to the nostalgia that the funicular evokes, not to mention that the characters Holmes, Moriarty and Watson are in your subconscious all the time.

After exiting the funicular, you will hear the noise of the waterfall, which is thunderous. As if that were not enough in this initial section of the road, it is advisable to go quickly if you do not want to end up soaked, although be careful, because the ground is very wet and slippery. If you want to take photos, better bring a water camera or cover yourself with an umbrella. In any case, there is no reason to be alarmed, as there are platforms and viewpoints to take beautiful photos of Reichenbach.

The path crosses a forest and gradually ascends and makes a detour to reach the first viewpoint in approximately fifteen minutes from where there is a spectacular view of the waterfall.

It is a short climb and perfectly accessible for small children, although forget about baby carriages. Take a backpack.

The path continues to climb, passing through other platforms and each time they get closer to the different waterfalls that there are (seven in total), until they finally cross them. From the last viewpoint we will go up the path for five minutes until we cross the road and we will continue climbing some stairs to the Zwirgi hotel. On its terrace you can contemplate fantastic views of the Hasli valley.

Although there are many fantastic attractions in the Berner Oberland, the Reichenbach Falls have the advantage that their visit is very cheap. They also have the impressive gorges of the Aare right next to which it is possible to access thanks to a combined ticket.

With the whole Sherlock Holmes theme we thought that they would not be so bad and that she was probably a touristy. Nothing is further from reality; If Doyle chose them to be one of the settings in his book, it was because of the spectacularity and beauty of these waterfalls.
