History
The origins of Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen date back to 1606, when the Danish King Christian IV had a majestic castle built for summer residence, beautiful gardens and an orchard to supply the royal court.

Although the construction of the castle took thirty years to complete, Rosenborg soon became the castle of choice for the monarch. So much so, that before dying, King Christian IV asked to be taken there to spend his last days.
Rosenborg Castle served as a royal residence until 1710, when Frederick IV changed his summer residence to a more modern palace. At that time Rosenborg became home to the royal collection of jewelery and other valuables, which are displayed in rooms that have remained intact since the 18th century.

The royal rooms in Rosenborg include the throne room, guarded by three silver lions; the royal tapestry room, which houses pieces that narrate the Swedish-Danish wars; and a throne with a built-in toilet.
Without a doubt the most valuable part of Rosenborg Castle is the jewelery collection of the Royal House of Denmark. Among these small treasures are the original crowns of various Danish monarchs, scepters, earrings and rings made of diamonds and other precious stones. Queen Margaret II uses some of these jewels on very special occasions.
