Caprera Island, Sardinia, Italy (with Map & Photos)

Caprera Island is part of the Maddalena archipelago, on the northwestern coast of Sardinia. It is a piece of land with little height, with Mediterranean macchia vegetation and white sand beaches along its 34 km of coastline.

Caprera, despite being an island, is connected to Maddalena Island by an artificial land bridge, which facilitates a visit to discover the almost virgin coves and dive enjoying its seabed. One of the most beautiful beaches is in the Cala Brigantina fjord, below Mount Teialone.

On the west coast of the island, next to the ex-military nucleus of Stagnali, we find the forest barracks of the Caprera Reserve, while to the south we will go closer to see the view of Porto Palma and the small island of Porco.

The northwestern coast also offers other interesting destinations such as the Napoletana and Caprarese coves, Cala Serena and Isola degli Italiani, along with Cala di Garibaldi, which usually has more tourist traffic.

The beaches in the eastern area are less accessible and have small beaches that can be reached by sea if we have a boat. Cala Napoletana is another beach that resembles a paradise, north of the island of Caprera, which is accessed by a dirt road.

In 1981, the island of Caprera passed from military control to become a nature reserve, open to tourists who visit its beaches and search for the house-museum of one of the Italian heroes, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who spent his last years imprisoned here. Thousands of tourists come every year to visit one of the most important points in the history of Italy.

Outside, in addition to the tomb is a marble statue that majestically displays Garibaldi's pose.

After a life full of adventures, navigating the Río de la Plata, fighting for the independence of Uruguay, and especially after the landing in Marsala that gave way to the process of unification of Italy, Garibaldi finds in Caprera that place in the world where rest peacefully, away from the political turmoil of the late nineteenth century.
