In part of its route and along the Rhine, it formed the limits with the Roman Empire. The Danube River protected it from attacks and invasions from the north and west. Even in the Middle Ages it fulfilled its mission by trying to stop the Russian invaders, which did not happen since they entered and occupied a large part of Europe.
