The lighthouse is located on the rocky promontory of Marshall Point at the end of the St. George Peninsula that separates Penobscot Bay from Maxongus Bay. The cape itself is named after a local resident, from whom the land was bought for the construction of the lighthouse.

History

The Marshall Point lighthouse was needed to provide navigation to Port Clyde. The original lighthouse was built in 1832, and was a cylindrical stone tower 6 meters high, from which a covered bridge led to the caretaker's quarters, also made of stone. The construction cost was $ 2,973.17. But already in 1842 the fourth caretaker, appointed to the lighthouse in 1841, described its condition as "unsatisfactory". In 1857, $ 5,000 was allocated to improve the lighthouse.

The new tower of the lighthouse was higher than the previous one (9 meters) and was built of granite in the lower part and stone in the upper part. At the top of the tower was a Fresnel lens. The bridge to the tower has also been updated. In 1895, lightning destroyed the original guardian's house and a new colonial Renaissance-style was built in its place. The complex of buildings also included a small boiler room and an anti-fog bell tower. The lighthouse was automated by the US Coast Guard in 1971.

The original Fresnel lenses used in the lighthouse are preserved at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland.

In 1988, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse is featured in the 1994 film Forrest Gump.
