History
Back in the days when the Roman and Parthian (Persian) empires were rivals, this region found itself right on the border between two gigantic rivals. It used to be part of the Roman Empire, Commagene, and its ruler. Mithridates I declared his independence. When Mithridates I died in 64 BC, his son Antiochus I claimed the crown and promoted the independence of this tiny kingdom. He signed treaties with both Rome and the Parthians. It was these actions that led Antiochus to believe that Commagene was more important than they really are, which ultimately led to his downfall when he was overthrown by the Romans in 38 BC. E. It is said that the tomb of Antiochus was hidden there, although his grave was never found, despite extensive archaeological work at this place.
