The Saxon Church of Biertan is the most visited fortified church in Transylvania, estimated to be visited by more than 50,000 tourists this year. Its age, large size and castle-like appearance undoubtedly contribute to its success as a tourist attraction.

Construction of the church began in the 12th century, while the outer walls were built three centuries later. Today the church has a triple row of protective walls containing seven towers and three bastions (bastions).

Biertan is one of the seven fortified churches in Transylvania that was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
