Belvoir Castle (12C), owned by the Lorraine families and the princes of Rohan until the 12C. XIX, stands on a promontory above the Sancey valley. In the county of Leicestershire, in the central part of the country bordering Derbyshire and Nottingham, for example, there is one of those typical English houses that can be perfect settings for the shooting of a period movie. The area of its construction is quite old and as it usually happens before the residence with so many windows that we see today there were other less delicate and more defensive constructions. Originally here stood a Norman castle that in the years of the English Civil War was one of the king's strongholds. It changed hands a few times but it was after a fire that it was rebuilt as we see it now.

The new Gothic style (boy do I like this architectural style), we owe it to the Dukes of Rutland. It has a certain air of a medieval castle with a central tower but not much else. Belvoir Castle has been in the hands of the same family, the Rutlands (first counts and later dukes) for five centuries. That's a lot of time.
