The Rupea Citadel is a sample of defensive military architecture from the Transylvania region, Romania. The first mention of the current citadel dates from the year 1324, although it was built on the ruins of some Dacian buildings.
The main utility of the citadel was to serve as a point of shelter and refuge for the inhabitants of the neighboring towns against the Ottoman incursions, and it also functioned as an administrative center of the region.

The Rupea citadel occupies an area of 11 hectares, and is made up of the outer walls, the inner walls, the watchtowers, the inner courtyards and a series of small buildings in the central part.
We find three differentiated spaces in the citadel: the lower citadel, where the access point to the citadel is located, and which has the largest inner courtyard of the citadel; the intermediate citadel, somewhat higher than the previous one, and where some buildings already appear, such as the chapel; and the upper citadel, located in the center of the building and occupying the highest place.

The upper citadel is the oldest area, dating from the 14th century. The lower citadel is the most recent part, and it was completed in the 18th century.
In addition to walking among the ruins of the citadel, you can enter some of the towers (the Powder Tower, the Tower of the Servants, etc.) and some of the buildings (the chapel, the chaplain's house, the house of the summit or the group of houses A, B, C and D).
Admission is 10 lei for adults, and 5 lei for children. Parking is free, and access hours to the citadel are from 09:00 to 20:00 in summer, and from 09:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year.
