The Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is one of the most famous elements of the railway infrastructure, was built by Robert McAlpin and sons. The construction was supervised by his father, who became so interested in building with concrete that he was given the nickname "Concrete Bob". The bridge was built along an elegant curve that allows train passengers to look out the window and enjoy a fantastic view of the other end of the train as it travels along the tracks against the backdrop of the scenic Scottish Highlands.

There is a legend that during construction a horse fell into the middle of one of the pillars of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. However, a study conducted by Professor Roland Paxton in 1987 did not confirm this conventional wisdom. Nevertheless, a study conducted in 2001, using one of the most advanced scanning technologies at the time, made it possible to discover the remains of a horse in one of the pillars of a nearby viaduct, which had the same legend.
