Derwentwater or Derwent Water is a lake in the county of Cumbria in northwest England.
Derwent Water is a landscape of moods, ranging from spectacular waves crashing against Monk Rock to the absolute mirror-like calm of the early morning. Here tourists can expect exciting experiences, soaring mountains, picturesque valleys and even a sandy coast.

Source of Inspiration
Derwent Water has a rich history. In the 16th century, its shores were used for the local mining industry, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, the lake became a source of inspiration for romantic poets such as William Wordsworth. Back in Victorian times, Derwent Water became the center of the tourist industry, bringing vacationers to Keswick by rail.
Not far from the pier is Friars Rock with stunning views of Derwent Water and the Borrowdale Valley.
The English writer and artist John Ruskin (1819-1900) called this view one of the three most beautiful in Europe. On the rock there is a monument to Ruskin, a stone slab with a bronze portrait medallion.

What to do at Derwent Water
The most popular way to enjoy the beauty of the lake is to take one of the boats. The main marinas are only 10 min. walk from Keswick town centre. While there is plenty to do here with several sailing and windsurfing centres, rowboats and powerboats for rent, Derwent Water is remarkably peaceful and perfect for the family, whether it be picnicking, fishing, swimming or just taking a stroll.
Derwentwater Walk is a scenic 16 km walking route around Derwent Water. On smooth and easy trails, it passes through ancient forests and along the shores of the lake with stunning scenery, ideal picnic stops, cafes and restaurants along the way.

How to get to Derwent Water?
The nearest railway station, Penrith, is 27 kilometers east of Keswick. Buses run hourly from here to the city centre.
