If you ask a Bulgarian mountaineer “What is your favorite mountain?” The answer is most likely “the Pirin Mountains”. Why? Pirin attracts lovers of outdoor activities, with its glory as "the most difficult" of the Bulgarian mountains, as well as its reputation as the sunniest mountain range. With its rocky peaks and jagged ridges, glacial lakes and centuries-old forests, Pirin has an image of a true alpine mountain, a paradise for those who like to walk in the mountains, surrounded by wide views and impressive landscapes. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea determines the mild and sunny climate, but also ensures a fair amount of snowfall in winter, brought here by Mediterranean cyclones.

Of course, the first impression of the mountains is, when you see them from below in the valley – in this case for most visitors it is from the Razlog gully or valley – a flat area between the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains, where the largest town in the area is located - Razlog, and the most popular starting point for hiking in the Pirin Mountains - the town of Bansko. Bansko is also the largest and most modern ski resort in Bulgaria. The first look towards the mountains, after crossing the Predela pass, is amazing and awe-inspiring. The entire main ridge of North Pirin, stretching from northwest to southeast, is visible – rocky peaks and high mountain passes, which are the tops of long valleys, cutting through the mountains to the gully.

Outdoor Activities in the Pirin Mountains – Pirin is an exceptional location for all kinds of outdoor activities. Hiking and backpacking in summer is possible thanks to the extensive network of marked trails, and the possibility of spending the night in mountain huts and lodges. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are possible in winter, but only for those with the experience and respect for harsh weather and terrain. The lower areas of the mountains are ideal for mountain biking and easier walks through the forest. The Bansko ski center offers good opportunities for skiing – on piste or off piste.

They are located in the very south of the country. The name of the mountains is often associated with Perun, the god of thunder. Indeed, strong winds and storms are quite frequent in Pirin. This ridge stretches from the northwest to the southeast for seventy-five kilometers. The highest point is Mount Vihren. It is only ten meters below Musala - the "roof" of Bulgaria. The height of Vihren is 2914 m above sea level. The Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria have preserved their virgin nature better than any other. Dense pine and spruce forests cover the slopes, and edelweiss blooms on the cliffs. In the northern part of the ridge there is a biosphere reserve, which is under the auspices of UNESCO. And in the south, near the extinct Kozhukh crater, in the area of Rupite, the blind soothsayer Vanga lived and received visitors. Most tourists choose the western slopes of Pirin for recreation. The climate there is warmer and sunny.
