On the eastern side of New Georgia, which belongs to the Solomon Islands archipelago, is the Marovo Lagoon. It includes hundreds of amazing small islands, most of which are covered with coconut palms, tropical forests and surrounded by corals.

Marovo Lagoon is a double barrier lagoon surrounded by a reef, which means that a chain of coral reefs and islands surrounds the large island of Vangunu. The 12,000 people living in 70 villages of Marovo refer to Wanguna as "the mainland", while the chain of islands and coral reefs that form the border with the deeper sea are known as "barrier islands".

The diving and snorkeling here is some of the best in the world - below is a graveyard of sunken planes and ships from World War II. Here you can even swim with almost extinct loggerhead turtles (which weigh up to 150 kg), if you're lucky.
Marovo Lagoon Solomon Islands |
The lagoon is part of the western province of the Solomon Islands and one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. However, don't expect wide expanses of silky sand. Although the Marovo lagoon boasts sea-green water, this is not a place for a beach holiday. People come to this place to visit the colorful local villages, have a picnic on deserted islands, go on a lagoon tour, meet master carvers, go kayaking on the lagoon, walk through the rainforest or climb stunning peaks.
