The Church of the Holy Christ is a famous place of pilgrimage. The mild climate and lush vegetation have made the city of Portugal an important year-round tourist resort. Its harbor has a breakwater nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) long that serves as a fueling station and offers funds for minor repairs to transatlantic ships. Ponta Delgada is the leading trading center of the Azores, exporting pineapples, oranges, tea, wine, cereals, vegetables and dairy products. Sugar and liquor processing and tourism are major components of its economy.
Ponta Delgada is divided into three large-scale districts: San Pedro, San Sebastian, Sao Jose. Sao Jose is considered the most touristic area of all - it has the most developed infrastructure, a large number of hotels and restaurants. The most interesting sights are also in this area.
