In the 18th century, Porto Alegre was the lake port for the city of Viamao. Its ancient name is Porto dos Casais. In addition to immigrants from the Azores, a significant part of the population was made up of families from the city of Rio Grande (Brazil), located in the coastal region south of Porto Alegre, at that time a former military fortress.
