American ghost towns are a terribly attractive thing. Some look more like amusement parks, where not the most courageous tourists come to be afraid as a joke, but others are frightened by total desertion and creepy stories about ghosts. The most curious of the American "abandons" - in our selection.

1. Bodie, California
A ghost town with a bad reputation. In the 1880s 10 thousand inhabitants lived here, saloons, a red-light district worked, the sounds of shooting and fights were heard - in general, life was in full swing. By 1930, the city was completely empty, the railway tracks were dismantled, and in 1962 Bodie was declared a historical park. And tourists flock here.

There are a lot of “exhibits” here: old cars, carts, houses, mines. There are also ghosts: sometimes you can hear children playing in the street, sometimes someone’s presence is felt in the mine. For visitors, there is an informal, but therefore even more strict ban on “souvenirs”: those who take even a pebble from Bodie will face a curse and terrible troubles.
2. Goldfield, Nevada
The city with the pretentious name Goldfield ("Golden Field") was founded at the end of the 19th century near the gold mines. At the very beginning of the 20th century, it was one of the most prosperous places in the region: it even built the best hotel in Nevada . But in 1912 a crisis broke out and the city was deserted. However, they did not abandon it at all, some buildings were preserved, some were renovated. And nearby, they “grown” the “Forest of Cars” (International Car Forest) - a kind of art platform for artists.

Now Goldfield is quite a lively town with a ghostly historical center where you can order takeaway food and buy souvenirs.
3. Calico, California
The most hyped ghost town in the US. In the 1880s in these places, silver and other minerals were mined, 500 mines were drilled, but by the middle of the 20th century, the bowels dried up, and people began to leave the city. In 1951, Calico was bought by farmer Walter Knott and turned into a kind of amusement park.

Included: the groans of the dead miners in the adits, the ghosts of children in the windows of houses, on the streets - the shadows of teachers and even the mayor himself. Americans like to have Halloween parties here.
4. Kennecott, Alaska
Kennecott emerged in the late 19th century next to copper ore deposits. Once upon a time, houses grew here, trains scurried around, schools and shops worked - but for 80 years now there have been only rotten stairs, rusty pipes and skeletons of buildings that are about to collapse. Nothing is known about the local ghosts, but there are guides who know safe approaches to dilapidated houses.

Kennecott is a historical monument, visiting is free. The place is fantastically picturesque: red houses climb the hillock, and majestic mountains behind them.
5. Rhyolite, Nevada
The very fact that Rhyolite is located next to the legendary Death Valley makes it attractive for tourists. True, time spared this city less than others, leaving only the miserable skeletons of buildings, parts of walls and facades. But now sculptors and artists place their art objects here. There is also a series of funny ghost sculptures.
