Peculiarities
The reservoir was formed due to volcanic activity - the huge pit that arose as a result of the eruption gradually filled with water.
The length of the lake is about 19 km, the width is about 10 km, the depth reaches 340 meters.
It is located at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters above sea level. According to one version, its name is translated as a place where the rainbow takes on colors. The attractiveness of the reservoir for many tourists lies in the area that surrounds it, near it offers a magnificent view of the volcanoes - San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan.
In 1996, during an amateur dive into the lake, an archaeologist and diver at a depth of about 30 meters discovered the remains of an ancient city - fragments of residential buildings, religious buildings and other curious artifacts. They pointed out that there used to be a settlement here - one of the religious centers of the Maya civilization. There is a version that the village was located on an island that was flooded as a result of a natural disaster - a volcanic eruption or a landslide.
