Monte Argentario, Province of Grosseto, Italy (with Map & Photos)

Monte Argentario is a municipality, a peninsula that belongs to the province of Grosseto. All this is located in the Italian region of Tuscany, 150 km from Florence. This peninsula has two closed lagoons, and on Cape Argintario there are two small but very cozy towns.

How to get to Monte Argintario


The nearest airports are in Rome and Pisa, there is also a train station and bus stations.
If you take the Pisa-Rome train, you need to get off at the Orbetello station - this is the nearest one, by car about 15-20 minutes away. Intercity buses run from the station, they will take you to Porto Santo Stefano or Port Ercole, the journey takes 20 minutes, and the ticket costs 2 euros. On the same bus you can get to Grosseto, travel time - 1 hour, fare - 3.5 euros.

If you get there by car, then from Pisa airport you will drive 2.5 hours, and from Rome - 1.5 hours.

Climate


This peninsula has a very mild and pleasant climate. You can come to rest here at any time, the winters are very mild, since Monte Argintario is located in the south and is protected by the hills around.

And in summer, even in the most intense heat after a warm wind, clouds and high humidity cover the island. During this period, it is best to take warm thermal baths. These procedures can be visited in Saturnia.

Excursions and activities in Monte Argintario


Punta Telegrafo is the highest point at 635 meters. A medieval church was built on this mountain, in which the monastery is located. It has a restaurant serving Tuscan cuisine.

From the top of this mountain, an amazing view of the sea and the entire archipelago opens up. You can see the beautiful picturesque nature, sailing yachts in the distance, the road that runs throughout the island. And in good weather, this wonderful view can complement the distant shores of the island of Corsica.

Back in the 16th century, the Spaniards built a chain of defensive fortresses and towers on Cape Argintario. So they kept the Tyrrhenian Sea under control. The largest and most famous tower is Fortezza Spagnola. By visiting it, you can see various exhibitions dedicated to shipbuilding and shipwrecks. You can also visit two more towers from this chain - Forte Filippo and Forte Stella.

Holidays and events


August 3 is the most important day in the city of Porto Santo Stefano, on this date the remains of St. Stephen thrown into the sea by fishermen were found. The celebration takes place in 17th century costumes. Dressed up people pass through the city, followed by a string of boats, which are illuminated with special lights.

Palio Marinaro is a famous rowing competition, held on August 15 in honor of the Tartan boat. Used to transport timber and coal, these ships saved the island from pirates in the past.

The City Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of August. It is very fun and noisy, all the residents are celebrating, wine tastings, folk festivals are held, and at night colorful fireworks explode in the sky.
