In northeast Virginia is Mount Vernon, the plantation home of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Due to its proximity to Washington DC, and its enormous historical importance, it attracts millions of visitors each year.

Situated in a picturesque location overlooking the Potomac River, the sprawling estate was Washington's home from 1754 until his death in 1799. The outbuildings and gardens are a delight to explore and have demonstrations on how the plantation worked. But the highlight is the huge mansion in the center that was designed and decorated by the great man himself.
Filled with fabulous furnishings, family portraits and period pieces, and with more than 20 rooms, visitors will be able to learn about the life of this influential figure. You can also learn more about him and his accomplishments at the on-site museum and educational center, as well as pay your respects at the moving George and Martha Washington Memorial.
