Limahuli Garden & Preserve, Kuhio Highway (with Map & Photos)

Limahuli Garden and Preserve (17 acres or 6.9 ha; 985 acre garden or 399 ha preserve) is a botanical garden and nature reserve on the north shore of the Kaua'i Island of Hawaii. It is one of the five gardens of the non-profit National Tropical Botanic Garden.

Description


Limahuli is located in a tropical valley that spans three separate ecological zones. It is away from JaƩn State Park and Key Beach, off Route 560 (near its western end) on. The ridge of Mount Makana looms behind, and Limahuli Creek includes an 800-foot (240 m) high waterfall descending from the upper edge of the valley at 3,330 feet (1,010 m) to sea level just below the garden. The area is sometimes referred to as Bali Khai, the name used in the 1958 film South Pacific. which was filmed on location in the area. The name comes from lima huli,which means "turned hand" in Hawaiian.

A short circuit will take you past the ancient botanical terraces and along the beautiful Limahuli Creek, with spectacular views of the sheer cliffs and the ocean. The native plant gardens encompass more than 400ha. The public gardens occupy 7ha, while the surrounding 400ha is a nature reserve.
