Before I start a series on what to visit in England, which, in addition to well-known places, will also include those that I have discovered in the past few years, a small personal digression.
Windermere Largest Lake |
While sailing on Lake Windermere just a few weeks ago, I decided it was time for a change in my life. For good change. The immediate cause was an incident shortly before departure, when I got into the car and the postman brought a letter from the bank with inappropriate loan payments.
Now let's go to Windermere. It will be about the lake and the castle, which was seen by a small percentage of visitors to the lake.
Windermere is the largest lake in England, but near the lakes of Scotland it looks like a spilled glass of water. But a lake is a lake. It is 20 kilometers long and about a kilometer wide.

What can you see and how much does it cost?
We leave the car in the town of Windermere. You will have half an hour leisurely walk to Bowness (also can be reached in a few minutes, but I recommend walking), which is located right on the lake. Parking for a few hours in Windermere can be found for free, there are such places, and in paid parking lots the price is about 6 pounds for a few hours. In Bowness, on the lake itself, the same thing, maybe a little more expensive. There is a train station in the town of Windermere, which can be reached, for example, from Lancaster by passenger train. And in Lancaster, in turn, there are bullet trains (they go around corners like airplanes) Virgin Train going to Scotland.
But back to the lake... Peace and quiet...
Beatrix Potter is a famous children's writer here in England, living on the shores of Lake Windermere. Her husband was a real estate agent.

Several lines of ships ply the lake. It is operated by Windermere Lake Cruises, which has a virtual monopoly on passenger traffic on the lake. We have four main lines marked with colors (blue, red, yellow, green) that we can use to get to different places on the lake. The round trip boat trip takes from 45 minutes (this is the shortest island cruise without visiting the pier) to 1.5 hours to the furthest point. You can also take two connecting lines to both ends of the lake, which will take 3 hours (Bouness is about halfway along the lake).
