This bridge is one of the longest bridges in the United States, measuring almost 11 kilometers. This bridge connects the Florida peninsula with the better known Florida Keys. Its construction was finished in 1982.
Seven Mile Bridge |
It actually consists of two bridges joined in the same place. The first bridge was built in 1910 as part of a railroad, but was badly damaged by the Labor Day hurricane in 1935, then restored for automotive use. In 1960, after Hurricane Donna and due to structural damage, it was decided to build a new bridge.
It was designed by Figg and Müller engineers, who completed the project months ahead of schedule. And if all of its history hasn't convinced you why it's one of the most important bridges in the United States, the Seven Mile Bridge has won eight awards.
