In Laurel, Maryland, on the western side of U.S. Route 1, there existed a mall called Laurel Mall. The mall, which united the freestanding Montgomery Ward on its south side with the Laurel Shopping Complex to the north, opened on October 11, 1979. On May 1, 2012, the mall was permanently shut down.

Montgomery Ward and JCPenney were the first two anchor stores in the Laurel Centre Mall when it was built by Shopco Inc. A third anchor, Hecht's, was added in 1981. On April 16, 1969, the 167,000 square foot (15,500 m2) Montgomery Ward shop began operation on its own.
