The New England Development Corporation invested $100 million in the mall as part of a $100 million initiative to renovate the former New England Shopping Center, which included General Cinemas, Service Merchandise, and Sears until it closed in the middle of the 1980s. Due to the fact that Sears' already constructed structure was incorporated into the mall's development, it was distinctive in that it was built differently from the rest of the mall. The mall's doors officially opened on August 17, 1994.
