Golf Mill, an outdoor shopping center with a Sears and an office tower fashioned after the top of a golf ball by Chicago architect Edo Belli, debuted to the public in October 1960. It had a comprehensive "mill" concept, including ponds, bridges, and a functioning waterwheel. A Lord's department store was constructed soon after it first opened, but it soon closed and was replaced by JCPenney. At that time, the north end of the complex that wasn't linked to the hallways saw the construction of the Mill Run Playhouse.
