Make a Splash
Whichever craft you choose, getting on the water is a great opportunity to appreciate the local natural beauties. Kayaking in the bay's tranquil waters is a terrific location to start if you're new to water sports or have a family. Have a guided tour with a professional who can teach you the ins and outs of the beautiful setting and its fauna, or rent your own! Stand-up paddleboards may be rented so that adventure seekers can explore the Bay at their own speed. Hundreds of surfers visit our beachside community every year to ride beginner to intermediate waves in the shadow of The Rock. Morro Bay is also a well-known surfing destination.
Take a Walk in the Park
Outside enthusiasts, rejoice! Three lovely state parks, each with its unique views, activities, and atmospheres, are near Morro Bay. Visit Morro Bay State Park, which is also home to the well-known Morro Rock monument, for a more comprehensive experience. With 135 campsites, an on-site museum, an 18-hole public golf course, and a variety of outdoor activities including sailing, fishing, hiking, bird watching, and more, it's no wonder that residents and tourists both like this stunning park!
If you want to obtain some fresh air, you may also visit the lovely and entertaining Morro Strand State Park. You have a choice between taking a stroll along the fine sand beaches, unwinding at a picnic place along the shore, or having fun in the sand dunes. The three-mile beach is a well-liked location for sports including fishing, windsurfing, running, and kite flying, and offers an RV park and camping as well.
Montaña de Oro State Park, the third state park on our list, is a picturesque and remote 8,000-acre park with stunning, expansive scenery that includes rocky cliffsides and coastal plains. On the park's numerous hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding paths, naturalists and hikers will feel perfectly at home. There are also rustic and equestrian campsites available.

We've previously discussed how Morro Bay is the ideal location to view some of California's most diverse wildlife; read our guide to find out more. Discovering Morro's native plants and animals is a wonderful way to spend time outside. Taking one of the many whale viewing trips available along the Embarcadero out to sea to see breaching whales is one of our favorite ways to get some fresh air. Did you know that the National Audubon Society has identified Morro Bay as an Important Bird Area? This means that many of our feathered companions, especially marine and shore species, must stop there on their migratory routes. One guaranteed way to have a magnificent day full of outdoor sun and fun is to take some time to get outside, enjoy Morro's mild weather, and catch a glimpse of the many beautiful birds that call it home (for at least part of the year).
There are still remnants of Morro Bay's early history as a tiny commercial fishing community all across the city. Morro not only pioneers sustainable fishing methods but also provides excellent options for leisurely fishing from the shore, the pier, or a boat. Set up on land and throw your line from one of the nearby beaches, or hire a private charter for a private day of fishing on the Bay's stunning waters.

Morro Bay holds several outdoor activities that bring the community together to take advantage of the fresh coastal air, unique scenery, and lovely weather. It also offers fun-filled outdoor entertainment year-round. At the Morro Bay Kite Festival, dozens of kites take to the sky every April for some high-flying excitement. The greatest kite-flying wind may be found near Morro Bay, which draws flyers from all over the world in quest of the ideal breeze.
The Morro Bay Bird Festival, a celebration of the region's birds and other animals, takes place at the beginning of the year. Similar to the kite festival, the bird festival attracts ardent birders from all over the world who are drawn to the rich environment and Morro Bay National Estuary.
