A blend of shopping, entertainment, and amusement was the main focus of Torrance, California's Old Towne Mall, which lacked department store anchors. It cost $30 million to create and debuted with 142 unique stores, one-off food vendors, and artists on October 9, 1972.

With the South Bay Galleria and Del Amo Fashion Center nearby, the mall could not successfully compete. Marshalls and Dayton Hudson's then-new "Plums," which debuted in September 1983, were installed as two large box anchors when the owners renovated the mall in 1982 for $3.8 million. Old Town Place is the new name for the area. Electronics retailer Federated Group collapsed in 1989 and was replaced by Silo, which operated in the same space but went out of business in 1995.
