On the west coast of the island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii, there is a park known as Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. The historical park protects the location where, until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who disobeyed a kapu (one of the old rules) might flee to this haven or Pu'uhonua to avoid certain death. A priest would pardon the culprit, allowing them to depart. During the conflict, both fighters and non-combatants might take cover here. Powerful leaders lived on the grounds immediately beyond the Great Wall that surrounds the Pu'uhonua for numerous generations.

One of only four locations in Hawaii where the Hawaiian flag may legally fly without the American flag is Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, along with Iolani Palace, Mauna Ala, and Thomas Square.
