The indoor shopping complex, which CBL Properties developed and built, was first known as Walnut Square Mall. CBL & Associates held a groundbreaking ceremony for Dalton's first enclosed retail mall on the site of the former "Patterson Horse Racing Arena" in 1979. Sears and Belk served as the mall's first anchors, while Loveman's, a department store with a Chattanooga address, debuted on August 20, 1980. Steve Gipson and Fubar the Robot made appearances during CBL's grand inauguration of the mall throughout the five days from July 23 to July 27, 1980.
