Kilchurn Castle was built around 1450 by Sir Colin Campbell, the first Lord of Glenorchy. The structure was a five-story tower with a courtyard protected by an outer wall. In 1693, additional outbuildings appeared on the castle grounds, and this marked the birth of the first purpose-built barracks in Scotland.

By 1500, the southern wing of the castle had expanded significantly and a new reception hall appeared there. Later buildings date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Kilchurn was located on a tiny island in Loch Awe. The island was barely larger than the castle itself. Now it is part of the mainland.

Kilchurn was used by the government as a garrison during the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. The Campbells, a Scottish noble family, have been trying in vain to sell Kilkhurn to the state ever since they moved to Taymouth Castle. In 1760, the castle was badly damaged by lightning and has been in complete devastation ever since. Fragments of the ruined tower, scattered in the center of the courtyard, clearly illustrate the strength of the storm on that ill-fated day.
