Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth child of Queen Victoria and the spouse of the Marquess of Lorne, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, is honored by having her name as Lake Louise.
The lake's turquoise color is caused by rock flour that meltwater from the glaciers above it carries into it. The lake drains into the Bow River by the 3 km long Louise Creek, with a surface area of 0.8 km2 (0.31 sq mi).
