One of the earliest retail projects in Appleton, Northland Plaza opened its doors in 1969. A Kroger grocery and W. T. Grant were the original tenants. The original complex was created by Melvin Simon & Associates, currently known as Simon Property Group. During the center's early years, vacancies were a problem; by 1971, just W. T. Grant, So-Fro Fabrics, and Kindy Optical remained after Kroger, SuperRx Drugs, Hallmark, King's Food Host restaurant, and dry cleaners had all left. Despite these openings, Shopko set up a shop at the mall in March 1971. The Fox Cities had two stores, the largest of which was 60,000 square feet (5,600 m2). Despite W. T. Grant's closure in 1976, the plaza welcomed several new businesses the following year, notably RadioShack. In 1979, the W. T. Grant shop changed its name to Lathrop Furniture.
