The Forbes Company, located in Southfield, Michigan, created The Gardens Mall, which was once known as The Gardens of The Palm Beaches.
The mall's first three anchor stores—Burdines, Sears, and the second Macy's in Florida—opened on October 5, 1988. In 1990, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale joined as tenants. As the proprietors of the Macy's chain, Federated Department Stores (now Macy's, Inc.), merged all of its nameplates under the Macy's brand, which already had a site at the mall, Burdines closed its doors in 2003. On the old Burdines location, Nordstrom opened its doors in March 2006.
