J. Millard Tawes, a former governor of Maryland, ceremoniously cut the ribbon on April 20, 1967, to officially open the 165,000-square-foot Montgomery Ward shop. In the spring of 1967, Woodward & Lothrop, the second anchor of the two anchor malls, opened its doors. The $10 million, 500,000-square-foot (46,000 m2) center's grand opening, which included 60 retailers and both anchors, was held on September 21, 1967.
