Along US Highway 11, the Westlake Mall was built on the site of a former lake. With Sears, Grant's, and Loveman's as its three main stores, the mall debuted in 1969.
One of the largest crowds during a campaign rally for reelection hosted by former governor George Wallace in 1970 at the mall was believed to be 10,000 people. This was Wallace's final candidacy for governor.
